Hi, I'm Jake Spurlock

I'm an engineer driven by curiosity about how people use the web, and lately, how AI is changing it. I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area.

What I'm doing now

  • Senior Director, Forward Deployed Engineering at WordPress VIP. I work inside enterprise customers' teams on architecture, AI-enabled workflows, and agent integrations. At Pew Research Center, we made their research easier for LLMs to cite accurately (ChatGPT became their #2 referrer within 30 days) and moved their engineers to agentic development, which produced their largest release ever.
  • WordPress core committer and Security Release Lead. I led the WordPress 7.1.3 security release and was Release Coordinator for WordPress 5.5.
  • Adjunct faculty at USC's Iovine and Young Academy, teaching graduate courses.

Before that

I was a software engineer at WIRED, where I architected the Apple News integration featured at WWDC and wrote the WordPress plugin for Facebook Instant Articles. I also wrote Bootstrap: Responsive Web Development for O'Reilly (2013).

Nights and weekends

I build apps, and most of them start on a Little League field:

  • ScoutSheet
  • Draft Night
  • Celluloid: a macOS virtual camera app with filters, adjustments, and custom LUTs.
  • WalkUp DJ
